Tony Schumacher continued his domination of the Top Fuel division with his record-breaking 14th win and first at Virginia Motorsports Park.
Schumacher’s pass of 316.08 mph topped Hillary Will in the Top Fuel finals, but more importantly was Schumacher’s win over second-place Antron Brown in the second round.
“Winning against Antron second-round, the fans have to enjoy that, that was the ultimate crunch-time moment,” Schumacher said. “The final round there, I felt like I left a little bit on the table, I went in a little deep so I don’t feel like I performed my best.’‘
All Schumacher will have to do at Las Vegas to clinch his fifth straight and sixth overall championship is qualify.
“I feel like I drove great all weekend, but I don’t feel like I closed the deal, but we got the trophy.
“I love closing it in Vegas. Nothing personal. This is a great track with great fans, but there’s nothing like Vegas. If we can pull it off out there, it’s such a celebration everywhere you go there. The Countdown was set for a reason: to make it go down to the end. Yeah, we’re way ahead, but I think we’re doing it.”
While Pedregon and Connolly each beat the incoming points leaders in eliminations to keep themselves and a small group of other hopefuls in the running in Funny Car and Pro Stock following the fourth of six events in the 2008 Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
