After admittedly struggling to get down the track in Seattle one week ago, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac GXP Racing team returned to form at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, California. In each of the two sessions, WJ was among the best of the 20 Pro Stock Cars making an attempt at Infineon Raceway, with his 6.629-second elapsed time in the evening run, which came with a track-record top speed of 209.33 mph, earning the six-time champion the provisional fifth position with two attempts remaining.
“We made two pretty decent runs today with our GM Performance Parts GXP, despite having some sort of an electrical glitch in the evening session. I felt it during the burnout when it skipped a couple beats, and was running a little higher when I backed it up.
“Although I worried we might have broken a valve spring, I wacked it a couple times and it came back down, so we knew it was okay to run. It might have hurt the performance somewhere, because we saw some anomalies in the data, but it still made a solid pass. We’ll go through it, find the problem, get it fixed, take what we learned today and put it to good use tomorrow. We’re definitely off to a good start.”
