GM Performance Parts Pontiac GXP racer Warren Johnson had his most productive day of the 2008 POWERade Drag Racing season, powering to the semifinals of the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals in Joliet, IL. Starting from the second position, Johnson defeated John Nobile and Jim Yates in the first two rounds before facing his son Kurt Johnson in the semifinals.
Racing in the less-preferred right hand lane, WJ posted a solid 6.761-second elapsed time with a top speed of 204.85 mph, but was bested by his son’s 6.723-second, 204.85 mph pass, which was the quickest run of the semifinals. Despite not reaching the final, The Professor was pleased with his team’s performance, as it allowed him to solidify their position among the Top Ten.
“We made it to the semifinals for the first time this year, so I can’t really complain about our GM Performance Parts GXP’s performance today. Even though we had a few tuning issues, it was still a productive day when looking at the points standings.
“We’ll head back to the shop and see if we can take what we learned this weekend, and do a little testing before Englishtown. As I’ve said, we continue to move in the right direction. Now we just need to pick up the pace.
“Besides, it’s not quite as bad when you lose to your teammate. We knew going into the semis that we would have one car in the final, and other than meeting in the final itself, this was the ideal scenario. We’ll take that and move on, building on what we accomplished today.
