Justin Humphreys qualified fourth in Friday’s opening round at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, but an engine problem slowed him Saturday and he wound up 18th going into Sunday’s final qualifying day at O’Reilly Raceway Park.
“We broke a motor on the first run and had to change motors,” Humphreys said. “We thought we could run quicker in the second session but putting in the new motor set us back a bit.”
Humphreys was timed in 6.735 seconds on Friday. He followed Saturday with a 7.429-second time and then his best of the day, 6.701 seconds, in the RaceRedi Dodge.
Humphreys expected things to return to normal Sunday. “I’m excited,” he said. “We have good horsepower and it’s just a matter of us doing what we need to do . . . qualify for the U.S. Nationals.”
