The Lucas Baja Racing Team and driver Rob Reinertson are in second place in the Pro Truck point standings heading into the final race of the 2007 season, the 4th Annual Baja Cup Challenge at the Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California on December 8.
Reinertson is coming off an impressive fifth place finish in the legendary SCORE Tecate Baja 1000 in November. Heading into the final race of the year, Reinertson has a chance to capture the Pro Truck Points Championship.
“We want to finish off this excellent year with a points title, ” said Reinertson. “It takes consistent success throughout the year to put yourself in this position, and this team and this truck have been able to accomplish that. ”
The Glen Helen Raceway has several unique aspects that add to the excitement of the season finale. The race begins with a land rush start that places the trucks side-by-side with no more than a foot between each vehicle. The short and compact track also affects the strategic approach. Co-driver Place pointed out, “The race is only a few hours long, so you need to have a very aggressive mindset early and sustain it throughout the race. ”
Last year The Castrol Team participated in the Baja Cup, and Reinertson handled the driving duties in that race as well.
“It always helps to have run a course in the past, ” said Reinertson. “Especially with one that is as unique as this one. ”
The veteran driver is eager to go after the championship.
“This is the kind of accomplishment that marks you as the best at what you do, ” he said. “This would put an exclamation point on what has been an outstanding year for the team. ”
Reinertson’s success in the Pro Truck division is only part of the outstanding performance The Lucas Baja Racing Team has put forth during the 2007 season. The Trophy Truck continued their rise to the top of their class with a sixth place finish in the Baja 1000.
“It has been a great season for The Team in both Pro Trucks and Trophy Trucks, ” said co-driver Eric Place. “We are competing for a points championship in the Pro Truck division and we are ready to compete for the 2008 title in Trophy Trucks after a very strong finish this year. ”
