A Look At 2008 Hyundai iMax CRDi

Drive

The Hyundai’s value equation depends on just how much space you need. For oversized families it represents great bang for your buck, but unless you need all the space, there are more attractive, better-to-drive options around - most notably the very capable Honda Odyssey which is $700 cheaper in base form.

The iMax’s 2.5-litre direct injection four-cylinder turbo diesel engine is a definite strong point, offering comparable performance to some V6 engines in the people-mover segment.

It has plenty of torque, or pulling power, which means it coasts comfortably at low revs and makes light work of overtaking, even with a full load of people and luggage on board.

The iMax is based on commerical van underpinnings and is designed to carry heavy loads.

To that end, it is more comfortable when fully laden and tends to skip about a little when empty.

The ride is reasonably comfortable for a van of this sort, although not up with the class leaders in this segment. A fair bit of suspension and road noise intrudes into the cabin, especially on rougher country roads.

Practicality is the iMax’s strong suit. None of the eight passengers could complain of a lack of head, knee or foot room. The seats, however, are a little flat and unsupportive, with minimal adjustment for the driver and passenger. The steering wheel is only tilt-adjustable, which makes it harder to find the ideal driving position.

The diesel version of the iMax gets stability control, ABS with brake distribution and two airbags as standard. Stability control isn’t available on the petrol model.

The iMax is a solid, dependable performer that should appeal to large families.

For people who want no-frills practicality - and don’t mind driving a delivery van - the iMax makes plenty of sense.
