A Look At Renault Sport Clio 197

Drive

Cast an eye over the Renault, though, and its single-minded driving focus shines through. The front and rear guards look steroid-fed, Brembo brakes hide behind 17-inch alloys and the spare wheel well has made way for a twin-exhaust system and downforce-producing rear diffuser.

It’s well endowed with luxuries, too, getting climate control, cruise control, trip computer and a chunky leather-shod multifunction steering wheel. A pity, then, there’s no auxiliary input for the CD player, but sports-minded buyers are unlikely to worry about such trivial omissions.

The outgoing RS Clio 182’s 131 kW 2.0-litre four was an absolute cracker and returns for action in the 197.

Renault has also replaced the fivespeed manual gearbox with a sixspeed version, and it’s a pleasure to use, with slick, swift shifts.

However, the six ratios are tightly spaced. This has allowed this bigger, heavier model to sprint harder than the old RS, but it makes you work.

Either way, the 197’s engine is a gem. The usable power band stretches from just above idle to the 7500 rpm redline, with a noticeable step up as the tacho sweeps past 5000 rpm.

The RS has survived the transition to the latest generation with its dynamic talents intact. While the new model’s wider tracks and longer wheelbase have brought increased stability and a more benign balance, it’s still enviably responsive and agile.

The new Clio is roomier, with sufficient space in the back to accommodate six-footers and a usable boot. However, that rear diffuser eats into the space for the spare wheel, so if the can of sealant and electric pump don’t do the job, you’ll be waiting for a flat-bed truck.

Much better is the vastly improved driving position - driving the old Clio was like sitting on a toilet - which benefits from tilt and reachadjustable steering and wonderfully supportive seats.

Renault has been at the front of the safety pack for years and the 197 continues the trend, getting front, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes and a switchable, sports-tuned stability/traction control system.
