The Touring comes in two trims with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines.
XSE versions add features such as auto headlights/wipers, leather-shod steering wheel and 16-inch alloys, and start at $32,990 in 1.6petrol auto form. A 1.6 turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre diesel version are also available.
The 2.0-litre HDi turbo-diesel four is thoroughly familiar, having served duty in a range of Peugeots. With 100kW of power and 320 Nm of torque (or 340 Nm for short periods, thanks to an “over-boost” function), its outputs are more or less the same as most 2.0-litre diesel rivals.

In six-speed automatic form, it delivers strong, smooth performance and supremely relaxed highway cruising.
There’s loads of pulling power at low to middling revs and the auto is adept enough to disguise any trace of turbo lag. It’s also quieter and more refined than most diesels.
The Touring feels much the same as the hatch on the road. That means good agility, impressive poise and predictability you can lean on through the bends.
With its longer wheelbase and rear overhang, the Touring is off to a strong start in terms of offering more flexibility than the hatch.
The boot, which is big and has a low loading lip is easy to use. With the middle-row seats and load cover in use there are 674 litres to play with, and more than 2000 when they are removed.
All models get six airbags, anti-lock brakes, brake assist and a five-star NCAP rating, but XS buyers have to pay $450 to get stability control.
If you are looking for something to regularly carry seven, the Touring’s cramped and space-eating third-row seating will probably put you off. Kia’s Rondo, for one, offers a better mix of space and flexibility.
