It was weekend that brought two different emotions to Casey Smith who caped off a long weekend of racing far from his Austin, Texas home. Smith traveled to 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida to take part in the Blizzards series season finale as a final preparation for the 40th Annual Snowball Derby that will take place the first weekend of December. Smith continued to search for speed at the Florida panhandle track as he was only able to take his Ford Fusion to a sixteenth place finish.
In racing you take it a day at time and that’s exactly what Smith did as he traveled just sixty miles west to Mobile International Speedway for the season finale where he has a strangle hold on the championship points standing. Smith built over a 100 point lead over his nearest competitor going into Saturday night.
Smith left off right where he had the last time he was at Mobile International Speedway. Smith captured the poll during qualifying which left his competitors guessing on what it would take to catch the young racing veteran. It would only be a few laps in before Smith would open a straightaway lead from the drop of the green flag until lap ninety-one which would be the end of a good thing for Smith. A faulty transmission would put smith out of the event early, resulting in a disappointing finish, but the big picture racing had paid off for Smith as we was crowned the 2007 Mobile International Speedway Miller-Lite Super Late Model champion immediately after the event.
“To be honest with you I have mixed emotions right now, I am really excited to be crowned the champion but man we should have won that race. That would have made for a much better celebration to have won both but I guess sometimes you can’t have your cake and eat it too. It’s really great to win this championship. Mobil is a place that has a lot of southern racing history to it so that alone makes it a special one on my list of accomplishments. I am looking forward to coming back to Alabama this week with another shot at hopefully winning another championship at South Alabama, ” said Smith.
What Smith was referring to was his chances of taking home the hardware from another historic Alabama track, South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Alabama. Smith currently holds a sixty-four point lead heading into this Sunday’s season finale of the track’s Viper Series.
