Chrysler's Next-Generation Voyager: 4WD-Style Wagon Drive

Chrysler introduces the next-generation Voyager in February. The seven-seater people-mover – known as the Town and Country in its American homeland – looks less conservative than the model it replaces.

Inside is a new Flip ‘n’ Go seating system, which allows the second-row seats to turn 180 degrees to face the third row.

Chrysler Australia has yet to confirm whether the Voyager will be offered with more than just the current 128kW 3.3-litre V6. In America, the model is also available with two higher-powered V6s: a 145kW 3.8-litre and 185kW 4.0-litre. A four-cylinder diesel sold in Europe is being considered for Australia. A V6 Voyager is expected to again start from $56,000.

Chrysler sister company Dodge returned to Australia in 2006 and in the second half of 2008 will expand its local line-up to four models with the addition of the Journey. The Journey uses the same platform as the Sebring and Avenger mid-size sedans and is available in both five and seven seats. It aims to blend the best elements of a family sedan, people-mover and 4WD-style wagon.

Dodge says the Journey is a “right-sized” crossover vehicle aimed at young families. Dodge wants a 2.0-litre turbo diesel with automatic transmission included in an engine mix that will select from four- and six-cylinder petrol units.
