The first leg of Chub Frank’s weekend visit to the Midwest with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series wasn’t to his liking, but the second half sure was.
After struggling to a 13th-place finish (one lap down) on a rough springtime racing surface Friday night at Farmer City (Ill. ) Raceway, the popular driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ roared back with a strong third-place run in Saturday night’s ‘Boswell Brawl 50’ at Indiana’s Kamp Motor Speedway.
Chub’s finish at Kamp – a track he had never visited prior to the weekend – was his best to date in nine events this season on the WoO LMS. He previous high was a fourth on March 24 at Columbus (Miss. ) Speedway.
“We went forward tonight, ” a pleased Chub said after advancing from the seventh starting spot to claim a $3,000 payday at Kamp. “That’s a good thing, considering the way things have been going. ”
The 45-year-old star from Bear Lake, Pa., saw his spring slump continue Friday night at Farmer City, where the difficult track conditions made the ‘Farmer City 50’ a survival game. But he had his Lester Buildings, Corry Rubber, All Star Performance, Corry Laser, Lake Shore Paving, Slavic Corporation, Farr MotorSports, Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* firing on all cylinders at Kamp, a three-eighths-mile oval that sported a racy surface.
