Cole Miktuk took his No. 6 goracekid.com Late Model Super Truck to Myrtle Beach Speedway last weekend for their three-day event, scoring an eighth place finish in his first time racing at the. 538-mile oval.
“It was the first time I’d raced on that track and the first time on new tires for me,” he said. Normally the ruck class races on used tires, cutting costs for the teams. “We got some pretty good times and got the hang of the setup,” on Friday. An early qualifying spot meant he qualified fifteenth, in mid-pack, but the team was “pretty satisfied with that because I had only been on the track for a day.”
The impound after qualifying meant that Miktuk and his crew could not adjust the truck for the race on Sunday. “We got the truck back on Sunday but could only make minor changes. We put a spring rubber in the left rear and a shim in the right front because it was a little loose,” reported Miktuk.
The outside line was better early in the race, while Miktuk’s inside starting position kept him to the low side of the track, dropping back a couple of slots until “the tires started to come in and we started picking up positions one by one,” he reported. The abrasive track surface caused everybody to lose speed. Miktuk “got the low line working,” he said. “That was how I got around and got to fifth place.”
He had a good battle for fourth place, swapping the position with another truck and both drivers waiting for the other to make a mistake. Eventually, the teen’s opponent slipped, tapping Cole’s truck and dropping him back. “I couldn’t catch him again with only five laps left,” he said, adding that the engine had started skipping, but he held on for an eighth-place finish. After the race, Cole’s crew said that the missing might have been vapor lock, from heat under the hood causing fuel to boil in the hoses.
Myrtle Beach may have been the last race of the season for Miktuk. He reports that he is not sure if the team is going to Dillon, S.C. Motor Speedway for the Thanksgiving weekend.
