David Mayhew: “Being familiar with a track is half the battle”

For David Mayhew this weekend’s season finale race at Altamont Motorsports Park will have a familiarity and comfort level that he hopes to levy into a first place finish. While only the third race for the driver from Atascadero, CA with the Golden Gate Racing Team, David has settled in well with the team and crew. During the past two races the group has honed crucial communication skills. With a stronger finish in each race, including a third place spot in the last race at Fontana, the driver and team are optimistic about a win this weekend. Look for a new paint scheme on the Golden Gate Meat Company / Golden Gate Petroleum and Bay Biodiesel #21.

This race will be a whole different experience from the prior two. First, Altamont is a familiar track. Mayhew has run Southwest Tour cars here several times and likes the larger oval and the diverse turns which make it a fun but challenging track. “Being familiar with a track is half the battle. ” Says David, “I know how to get around this circuit, and really like the configuration, that makes running it more comfortable and more fun. ”

Second, it’s a local track for the team. Many of the team’s sponsors will be in the stands, cheering right along with many of Mayhew’s family members who live close enough to attend. “He’ll probably end up with the biggest cheering section in the place – always a boost to confidence and makes winning all the more a sweet victory. ” Said Jim Offenbach, team owner.

Third, it’s going to be a lot of fun. In addition to the usual festivities that the Golden Gate Team/RCR Team provides at races, they will be joining forces with Sweet-Heat BBQ to host a big Season Finale BBQ dinner for everyone in the NASCAR Grand National West Series. This, undoubtedly bountiful and delicious feast, will be open all teams, NASCAR officials, the press and the Altamont officials. Team owner, Jim Offenbach, is also the top dog at one of the biggest meat companies on the west coast: Golden Gate Meat Company, San Francisco, so he will be providing the food and Sweet-Heat BBQ will be grilling it up to perfection.

The team really wants to finish up the point’s season with a win to show their appreciation for their devoted sponsors and supports and David wants to take the checkered as a thank you to both his sponsors and the whole team. “These guys took on the challenge of a driver change mid-season and have worked really hard to get me a great car – and I want to thank them with a first place finish. ”
