Drive

Hyundai has added a diesel model to the Grandeur large-car lineup and it’s cheaper than the petrol V6.

Good safety package, with stability control and eight airbags (front, side and curtain airbags, plus two side airbags for the rear passengers). Lots of equipment for the price. Comfortable seats with memory function and heating for winter. Engine is quiet and refined for a diesel. The claimed fuel economy of 7.9 litres/100km is excellent for a large car. Five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with 12-month roadside assistance.

The Grandeur feels nervous on corners. Steering lacks feel and accuracy. Suspension gets unsettled over bumps and corrugations in the road and feels floaty over irregularities at highway speed. Doesn’t handle as well as some of its rivals. Interior is laid out well but lacks the polish and style of the Japanese competitors. Resale value is likely to be below par.
