It was all the ‘Million Dollar Man’ in the Super Late Model portion of the 12th Annual Pete Jacobs Memorial presented by Federated Auto Parts, part of the 25th Annual UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by RacingJunk.com. With Shane Stewart winning the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car main event Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, a regular on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, was on hand for the Super Late Model portion and held off the challenges of former track champion Ryan Markham of Ashland, OH for the win.
When the green flag dropped at the start of the 25-lap $2,000 to win main event Moran shot into the lead with Ryan Markham in hot pursuit and for the first several circuits Moran and Markham blistered the track surface in a side-by-side ballet of heavy metal while Dave Hornikel and George Lee and Keith Berner and Doug Drown each imitated the front runners charging through the turns and straightaways door handle to door handle with Scott Peltz soon entering the fray.
After a lap ten caution for Trevor Phillips Moran and Markham led the way and as the laps ticked off began to put some real estate between themselves and Hornikel, Lee, Berner, Drown and Peltz. Two laps later Berner passed Lee for fourth with Drown in tow with the two soon going side-by-side for several circuits until Drown got by on lap 17. As the laps wound down Moran and Markham continued to set the pace and pull away and had the tail of the field in site when the checkers dropped.
“It’s good to be back at Wayne County and it’s good to be back in victory lane here,” commented Moran in victory lane. Moran won driving his Custom Cutters, Eddie’s Sunoco, Forest Park NAPA sponsored Mastersbilt Race Cars #99. “Ryan (Markham) is a heck of a good racer. And hats off to my crew, they did a good job tonight.”
Following Moran and Markham were Hornikel, Drown, Peltz, Berner, Lee, Eric myers, Rick Bond and Clint Coffman. Winning heat races were Moran, Lee, Markham and Ron Stuart while J. R. Gentry won the B Main. Moran was also the fastest qualifer in time trials with a time of 18.367.
In addition to an action-packed evening of quality Sprint Car & Super Late Model racing the 3rd Annual Wayne County Speedway Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held emceed by Chuck Griffith. Inductees in the Class of 2007 included drivers Keith Berner, Dave Haven, Sr., Tom Jarrett, Rusty McClure, George Prosser, John ‘Doc’ Simmons, Joe Thompson and Lloyd Wirt. In the Car Owner category Tom Green was selected while the late Jim Lehr and the late Clyde Shoup were chosen in the staff category. Selected for the fan category was George Stephens.
