Jenson Button needs to finish third in Sunday’s Brazilian grand prix to wrap up the Formula One world championship but the British driver says he is approaching the penultimate race with the same determination to win he has always had.

“I haven’t purposely gone out to finish in the points and not win races,” Button said, referring to his failure to win a race since the Turkish grand prix in June. “I go out to try and win every race I compete in and I have led championship all the way through the season.”

Button leads his Brawn-Mercedes team-mate, Rubens Barrichello, by 14 points with Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel a further two points behind the Brazilian. “It’s a different situation for the people who are chasing,” Button said. “They need to be more aggressive than I am. I don’t just want to finish in the points, that has never been my objective, but there are situations you don’t want to put yourself into. I think I’ve had a reasonably good balance.”

Button, who finished eighth two weeks ago at Suzuka, says the pressure has been reduced as the season heads towards its final race in Abu Dhabi on 1 November. “I feel lot more relaxed here than I did in Japan,” he said. “With just two races to go, this is a very different situation. Rubens has to do me by at least four points and Sebastian has to beat me by six – and that’s if I want to win the championship here. It’s a good situation to be in.” Guardian.co.uk

While Rubens Barrichello has a chance to end a 17-year winless streak at his home track.

“I feel so great to be here,” the Brawn GP driver said. “I put my hands into the sky to thank for the car I have and for the wins that I have and for the chance I have to win in Brazil, something that I have been dreaming of for a long, long time.”

This year he has one of his best chances to finally come through. He has had a remarkable season with Brawn GP and still has a shot at the drivers’ title.

“Hopefully here I can just put everything out and go for the win because I need it and because I want it so badly,” Barrichello said.

Barrichello finished second in the drivers’ standings in 2002 and 2004 with Ferrari, but never had a shot at the title then as teammate Michael Schumacher dominated.

“I feel that particularly it’s my very first chance ... to go for the title and win myself,” Barrichello said. The Associated Press

While Sebastian Vettel believes all the pressure is on title rivals Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in the fight for this year’s Formula One world championship.

“For me it is pretty straightforward - the only thing I can do is win,” said Vettel.

“You don’t have to be a genius to work out from now on we simply have to win the two races and hope the other two mess it up, so the pressure is on them.

“It is a good thing not to have the situation they are facing. They have to race each other.” The Press Association
