Jenson Button has warned McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton he is not prepared to let the gap between them become any greater.

Hamilton has finished ahead of Button in the last six consecutive races which has allowed him to open up a 15-point advantage at the top of the drivers’ standings.

And Button said: “I’m 15 points behind Lewis, which in old money (under the previous points system) was about six, and I don’t want that to grow any more. I thought I was going to claw a few points back in Germany, but that didn’t happen, so I hope I do this weekend.”

The McLaren duo were forced to settle for fourth and fifth around Hockenheim last weekend as their car was found wanting for pace in comparison to Ferrari pairing Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, as well as Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. The Press Association

Mark Webber has given Felipe Massa a vote of confidence by suggesting that he will be a stronger driver after the Hockenheim experience and the adversity he has overcome in the past year.

Massa has faced hostile media coverage in his Brazilian homeland for ceding victory to Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso in Germany, but Webber believes the episode will only strengthen his resolve.

“I think Felipe has had a very tough, but incredible, eight months to come back from what he did,” said Webber at the Hungaroring on Thursday.

“I think it’s clear that Ferrari but also Felipe have not had an amazing start to the year.

“But I think he’ll be much stronger for the back half of the championship and for next year.” ITV
