Jenson Button’s Formula One success in Australia has thrown the F1 world title race wide open.
Once again Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, who also failed to get a podium position in Bahrain, came unstuck despite leading for the first 25 laps before brake failure put paid to his chances and brought relief to those punters who benefitted from refunded stakes given from firms on drivers failing to finish this season.
Button’s latest win puts him six points behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, the winner in Bahrain and fourth Down Under, and has seen Jenson cut from 20-1 to 8-1 to become the first Britain to retain the title.
Whether he does so remains to be seen, and there is a lot of rubber burning to be done before it all ends in Abu Dhabi on November 14. Belfast Telegraph
Two-times world champion Fernando Alonso said on Thursday that he is focused on only one thing in his maiden season with Ferrari—winning a third drivers’ title.
“My only goal is to win the championship, and to score points on Sunday afternoons. I am not going to worry about anything other than that at all,” he said.
“So I don’t care to worry about Saturdays, or pole position, or qualifying or other things. All that matters for me is Sunday and the championship.”
“When I am in the car that is all I am thinking of—to win the race or to score points and to win the championship,” he added.
He explained that this was why he was not disappointed at finishing fourth behind Briton Jenson Button of McLaren, Poland’s Robert Kubica of Renault and his Ferrari team-mate, Brazilian Felipe Massa, in Australia last weekend. AFP
