Jenson Button has said he needs to find the right mixture of aggression and caution over the four remaining races of the season in his quest for world championship success.
The Brawn GP driver heads into this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix with a 14-point lead over team-mate Rubens Barrichello - the Brazilian albeit having shown the better form of late.
Barrichello led Button home in a Brawn one-two finish last time out in Italy and also won three races ago in Valencia to cut the Englishman’s advantage.
While the 29-year-old knows a circumspect approach in Singapore, Japan, Brazil and Abu Dhabi could still yield him the crown, he believes it’s a tactic he cannot afford to rely on.
“It is a great position to be in and I am very privileged to be leading the championship but it is also a tricky one as a driver as you are here to win and challenge for victory,” Button said.
“But you can also think that I only have to finish just behind my team-mate in every race now and I would still win the championship by six or eight points. SkySports
Red Bull isn’t throwing in the towel on its championship fight with Brawn GP just yet, even if a terrible day at the Italian Grand Prix has left it only four races to catch the season-long Formula One leaders.
Vettel now trails F1 leader Jenson Button by 26 points and Webber is 28.5 back.
Button has 80 points, Barrichello has 66, Vettel - who won in the rain at Monza last year - 54 and Webber 51.5. Brawn GP leads Red Bull by 40.5 points in the constructors’ standings.
“The Championship isn’t over our target is to do our best, we’re here to win races and the Championship, so we have to focus on that, all the rest is out of our hands,” Vettel said. Auto Racing Daily
