Jenson Button has vowed to maintain his ‘steady Eddie’ approach as he closes in on the Formula One world title.
With a 15-point cushion over Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello with three races remaining, Button can wrap up the championship in Japan this weekend.
Button simply needs to bag five more points than the 37-year-old to take Lewis Hamilton’s crown, although that is a feat he has failed to achieve for the last seven races. ARD
The Australian Mark Webber was in second place in the series midway through the season after winning the German Grand Prix and earning a series of podium finishes.
He is now out of contention heading into this weekend’s Japanese GP at Suzuka following his crash in the Singapore round last Sunday.
With three rounds remaining, Webber is fourth in the series on 51.5 points behind Brawn drivers Jenson Button (84) and Rubens Barrichello (69) and his own teammate Sebastian Vettel (59).
Webber says the Red Bulls will be “strong” at Suzuka but it is only Vettel who has the slimmest chance of preventing Button taking the crown.
Red Bull’s challenge was shaken after Brawn hit back to take a one-two at the Italian GP last month and all but sunk after Webber suffered brake failure to crash in Singapore and Vettel was hamstrung by a drive-through penalty. Brisbane Times
