The ‘Faster Pastor’ Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA got past Walker Arthur of Forest, VA on lap 3 to take the lead in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature, Cohick then had to hold off 14 year old Austin Hubbard of Seaford, DE to pick up his second win of the 2007 season.
“It feels great to get back in victory lane after having some terrible runs of late, ” commented Cohick in victory lane. “What a race, I don’t know how Austin (Hubbard) ran that top groove, we just seemed to be a little better on the bottom in turn 4; that 14 year old is trying to show us old guys a thing or two, ” added Cohick when asked about his battle with Hubbard.
In other action Craig Folmar, who started shotgun in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 feature, took the lead from Charlie Fasano on lap 5 and then had to hold off a last effort by Mary Anne Williams to get the win. In the Truckin thunder 30 lap feature Roger Jamerson took the lead on lap 28 and then held off Walker Arthur for the win. In the Charger 25 lap feature Bob Terry held off James Givens to get his third victory of the season and in the All American 15 lap feature Stephen Childress held off Kevin Fletcher for the win.
Brett Royal and Walker Arthur led the Victory Lap Late Model field to green with Arthur taking advantage from the outside. The races first caution would fly for a spin by Scott Adams in turn 2. Caution came back out on the restart as Royal looped his ride in turn 4.
On the ensuing restart Cohick went to work on Arthur for the lead. On lap 2 Cohick got a toehold under Arthur and took command of the lead out of turn 4. Behind Cohick the battle for third was heating up between Donnie Marshall and defending champion Jared Powell.
By lap ten Austin Hubbard was working the high side and working the high side of both Marshall and Powell. Once in third Hubbard went to work on Arthur for second.
Over the next 15 laps Hubbard kept the pressure on Cohick as the two put on a show for the fans with some exciting side-by-side action. With Cohick and Hubbard battling for the lead Stevie Long made his way to the third spot with a pass on Arthur.
With one to go Hubbard took one more stab at Cohick on the outside but Cohick had just enough to hold him off to take his second victory of 2007. Rounding out the top five were Austin Hubbard, tenth starting Stevie Long, Walker Arthur and eleventh starting Larry Grimstead Jr. Tyler Bailey picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his twelfth place finish.
In the Victory Lap Late Model ‘B’ Main Tony Wood of New Kent, VA and Wayne Carroll of Fredericksburg, VA led the 11-car field to the green. Wood quickly began to pull away as Carroll, Brandon Galloway and Pat Wood battled for second. Pat Wood would gain control of the spot and go to work on Wood for the lead. On lap 7 Wood got under T. Wood for the lead and went on to take the ‘B’ main win. Wood would then be disqualified for being too light, handing the win to T. Wood.
In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature came down to the last lap. Tyler Shipp of Mechanicsville, VA and Charlie Fasano of Ettrick, VA led the field to green with Fasano leading the first lap. Fasano began to pull away from the field when a caution came out on lap 2 closing the field back up on his bumper. On the restart Fasano was able to keep Bobby Mazingo at bay as Mary Anne Williams and fourteenth starting Craig Folmar battled for third.
On lap 4 Folmar put a slide job on Fasano out of turn 4 to take the lead. It looked s if Folmar would cruise to the win, but Williams had other ideas. With the laps winding down Williams kept applying the pressure. Each time Folmar was up to the challenge. On lap 23 the races final caution came out for a spin by newcomer J. T. Hawk.
On the restart Williams jumped to the inside of Folmar as they headed into turn 1. Williams emerged out of turn 2 with a slight lead. Folmar would have none of it as he battled back on the outside to race side by side with Williams to the white flag. As they raced out of turn 2 Williams slide up the track just enough for Folmar to get back the lead and take his fourth win of the season.
“First I have to thank my teammate Matt Stambaugh for letting me have his car tonight, I really don’t know how to thank him. I didn’t think I could get to the front, all the cars are getting faster every week, and Mary Anne (Williams) raced me clean, it was a hard faught victory tonight, ” commented Folmar.
Rounding out the top five were Mary Anne Williams, Bobby Mazingo, thirteenth starting Eric Keck and Charlie Fasano. Kevin Atkins picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his eighth place finish.
In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Davis Lipscombe and Tim Shelton led the field to green. Lipscombe and Shelton raced back to the line with Lipscombe leading the first lap by inches.
On lap 7 both Roger Jamerson and Walker Arthur get past Shelton for second and third. On lap 8 Jamerson began applying pressure to Lipscombe for the lead. The two put on a tremendous battle for the lead, racing side by side with Lipscombe working the outside, holding Jamerson off at the line each time by inches.
On lap 28 Lipscombe’s misfortunes continued, as a lapped car got into him spinning him in turn 4. That gave the lead to Jamerson held off Arthur to record his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Arthur, Kenny Moreland, Tim Shelton and Michael Roop. Kenny Moreland picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.
In the VMS Charger 25 lap feature Frank Addington and Chris Tatum led the field to green with Addington, Bob Terry and James Givens making it three wide for the lead. Givens emerged out of turn 2 with a slight advantage over Terry.
On lap 8 Terry finally got a nose under Givens in turn 4, this time he was able to take the lead. On the next circuit Givens tried a crossover move, but Terry held on to the top spot. On lap nineteen Givens got back to the outside of Terry and the two raced side by side for the next four laps with Terry barely holding on to the lead. Behind them John Kirby and Addington were side by side for third, with Kirby holding on to the position.
Terry was bale to hold of Givens and pick up his third win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Givens, John Kirby, Frank Addington and Kyle Nelson. Kyle Nelson picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.
In the All American 15 lap feature Dustin Owens and Johnny Brooks Jr. led the field to green. As they approached turn 1 it got three wide as William Dunn joined the race for the top spot. Brooks led the first lap by inches over Dunn.
Brooks and Dunn got together coming out of turn four on the next circuit bringing out the caution. That handed the lead over to Stephen Childress with Bob Shreves, Marty Coltrain, Kevin Fletcher and W. L. Johnston the balance of the top five.
On the restart Shreves and Coltrain battled side by side with Coltrain taking over third. Fletcher then worked his way into second and set out to catch Childress. Over the last five laps Childress was able to hold off any advances by Fletcher. Childress would coos the finish line less than a car length ahead of Fletcher for the win. It was the third of the season for Childress. Rounding out the top five were points leader Kevin Fletcher, ninth starting W. L. Johnston and tenth starting Charles Duke II.
