Ford’s famous Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan has suspended operations as of today in order to begin the retooling transformation suitable for small car production. The plant is slated to begin building smaller, more fuel efficient models by 2010.

Since its establishment in 1957, the Michigan Truck Plant has been the originator of the F-Series trucks, Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. In addition to a complete overhaul of tooling and assembly lines, the plant will receive a $75 million state-of-the-art body shop. Production of the full-size Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition will move to the automaker’s Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville the second quarter of 2009.

Already in the works is the conversion of Ford’s Cuautitlan Plant in Mexico that will build the all-new Fiesta compact car in 2010.
