In 2006 Matt made one start at the track while competing in select events of the ASA Late Model South Series, and he brought home a third-place finish in the race at South Georgia. “I haven’t been back to South Georgia since I raced in the ASA South Late Model race there last year. We were really fast, and we started up front. Hopefully we will have that same luck there this year. We finished third last year, but my current crew chief, Rich Lushes, led Landon Cassill’s team to the win in that race, so we should have a lot of information going into this weekend. ”
Matt Hawkins will get his next chance to try for the victory when the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series returns to action on March 31st at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Georgia. Racing will get underway at 7:30pm. All Pro Cup races will be seen on SPEED Channel.
“I think that we should be really good at Valdosta with as good as we ran at Lakeland. Mike (Garvey) and Bill Plemons, Jr., should have been up there, too. We all should have run top-five. With Mike, we shouldn’t go anywhere and run bad. ”
Going into the event at South Georgia Motorsports Park, Hawkins has the points lead for the Aaron’s Southern division, but he isn’t going to let that distract him going after the win.
“It’s a little too early to be thinking points, ” added Hawkins. “Maybe after Peach State we can start thinking, but right now there is not anything to think about. We just need to finish up front, and things should ÷ork themselves out from there. ň€ť That information should prove useful, as some say that South!Georgia can be a difficult tracű to get around.
“The racetrack is a little tight and it limius the racing you can do. You can’t really do anything. It is á one-groove track, and you race1pretty much in the middle. If you don’t start up front, you póobably are not going to finish up front. ”
While the team hasn’t tested at South Georgia, Hawkins is confident in their ability and with the momentum carried over from the win. He looks forward to being able to put his car up front, alongside his teammates.
