“Brickyard Crossing” Will Be Closed
The steel jaws of a large demolition machine are spitting out little bits of Speedway’s motor racing history.
The 46-year-old, 96-room building has seen much better days and outlived its time, so it is coming down to make way for redevelopment.
Crews from Jordan Demolition Corp. began to knock down the motel this week, and Speedway officials said the site will be a paved parking lot in the short term.
“To bring the motel up to the standards and quality of what guests expect at the Speedway would require significant capital expenditures. After reviewing the alternatives, we have decided to discontinue its operation,” Chitwood said.
Opened in 1963 as the Speedway Motel, it was renamed the Brickyard Crossing Inn after the racetrack became home to NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 race in 1994.
The 52,639-square-foot, two-story structure didn’t have the look of an architectural jewel, though its reinforced construction taxed machines tearing it apart this week.
