Jake “The Snake” Crum will be heading to Martinsville Speedway this weekend for the NASCAR Late Model Bailey’s 300 being held this Sunday afternoon with a good chance at a victory. He will be one of nearly 120 drivers attempting to make the 43-car field.
“I’m really excited to race at Martinsville, ” commented the high school freshman. “A lot of famous drivers have won here, there’s a lot of history. ”
Jake will just barely meet the age requirements as he turns 16 years old on September 25th, less than a week before the race. In fact, he had to sit out for the first practice held last Wednesday, with his crew chief, Nick Hutchins manning the wheel. Nick did a great job filling in for the youngster, driving some of the fastest lap times during practice.
“We were running some really good lap times, Nick did a good job, ” commented Jake’s father, Billy Crum. “I think if Jake was in the car, we would have been at the top of the charts. We’re really looking forward to this weekend. ”
Jake hopes to prolong his birthday celebration with a win on Sunday afternoon.
“Nick [crew chief] practiced my car and was running top 18, so I think we’ll do really well on Sunday, ” Jake added.
