As the green flag waved for the 24-car, 25-lap IMCA Stock Car Championship, it was three wide for the lead going into turn 1. Kevin Sustaire and Bryan LaRiviere got the worst end of that deal when they got turned around in the middle of that fight. Scotty Brown was the benefactor getting the lead from row 2. Lap 1 saw another big melee in turn 2 when Raymond King jr. got spun around and drilled by Tony Rime bringing out a yellow, scattering the field around them.
Benji Kirkpatrick and Buck Dempsey were a little over eager on the restart with the caution quickly back out. The next restart was better with Brown and Jeff Turner getting out, while Chad Estes got past Sustaire for third and B J Dulock ran side by side with Sustaire for fourth. On lap 2 Toby Miller, Wendall Bolton and Dennis Bissenette were three wide fighting for eighth.
Turner began putting pressure on Brown for the lead on lap 4, as Dulock got by Estes for third. Former IMCA Stock Car National Champion, Duain Pritchett moved up to seventh on lap 5 getting around Bolton. Pritchett then got along side Dempsey for sixth and took the spot on lap 6. Brown and Turner were still nose to tail as the B&B Teammates put distance on Dulock, while Estes and Sustaire battled for fourth.
Sustaire got the spot back from Estes on lap 9, at the same time Dempsey was retaking sixth from Pritchett. Those two scraps for for position continued as the duos swapped the spots nearly corner for corner. Coming to halfway it was Brown, Turner, Dulock, Estes and Sustaire in the top five. Brown had just started to get away from Turner when yellow waved for Julie Boettler who spun and backed into the wall. Under caution, Susaire pulled off from fifth.
On the restart the top five stayed nose to tail, while Bolton worked his way past Dempsey for sixth. Brown started showing a little smoke with a tire rub on the right rear. That tire exploded on lap 16 ending Brown’s chance for the win and handing Turner the lead on lap 17. Estes and Pritchett dueled door to door for third as Turner inched away from Dulock. Bolton caught the third place battle on lap 23 and made it three wide for the spot.
Up front Turner was increasing his advantage on Dulock slightly while the scramble for third continued with Estes getting the nose ahead as the white flag waved. At the checkers it was Turner, the new IMCA Southern SportMod Champion, showing his versatility by winning in the B&B Concrete, B&B Redi-Mix, Motors by Clint, Southside Graphics, Jet Phantom Chassis.
“I’m pretty worn out tonight, I feel like Jeff Gordon, ” joked Turner. ” I saw some sparks fly out from under Scotty’s car in turn 2. I knew right then he broke a trailing arm. It was just a matter of time before the frame rubbed through. I just didn’t know how long it would last and didn’t want him to spin in front of me. ” “Anyone can drive around Boone(Speedway), this track here is hard to get a handle on. ” added Turner comparing this race to the SuperNationals. “It’s just different here, there’s no track to compare it to. ” “I hope this race contnues to get bigger. This is the best time we’ve had other than Boone or Marshalltown. We hope to come back next year. “
“I think the passing points system is the best way to format a race. It will benefit you more than it will hurt you. You just have get your car set up and be able to move forward. “
