18-year-old Jesse Smith, the 2006 ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts Champion is on the fast track towards recovering from an early season slump and is now right in the middle of the 2007 ASALMS Northern Division Championship title chase!
In the last ASALMS North event, Smith survived a wild and crazy 100-lap Feature that saw a record 15 cautions fly at the Hawkeye Downs (IA) Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the Seventh race of the 2007 season; The Hawkeye 100 Presented by Coors Light and Cassill Motors. The St. Louis, Missouri driver suffered cosmetic damage early in the race, but still managed a solid Sixth place finish.
“We got the car really good in practice and then in Qualifying, we ended up Sixth. We were happy with that because we always know we will race better than we qualified. ” Smith stated as he and his Hormel Foods/SPAM team quickly fix the Hawkeye Downs damage in time for the next North race, which is this Sunday afternoon September 9, 2007 for the Eighth Race of the season at the Grundy County (IL) Speedway in Morris, Illinois; The 1st annual Bob Milner Memorial 125.
“At the start of the race the car was really loose and fell in line at Seventh. Then when I tried to pass the car in front of me the car behind me ran in the back of me and got me sideways. ” Smith continued. “Luckily I saved it through the grass and only lost Eight spots. After this we started to work our way back up to the front. The only problem was that there was a caution about every Three laps! ” Laughed the St. Louis, Missouri teenager.
