After qualifying on the outside pole (second) for Sunday’s Winchester ARCA 200, Brewco Motorsports and Phillip McGilton couldn’t wait for the start of the event. When the checkered flag flew, the team had a whole different outlook.
Qualifying second was a huge boost of confidence for McGilton, who led the ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year standings heading into the 20th ARCA event held at Winchester Speedway. Knowing confidence was on his side and a machine fast enough to sweep the victory; McGilton was hoping luck would be on his side.
Unfortunately, the team’s shining weekend was quickly overturned early in the 200-lap event. Following pole sitter Michael McDowell for the first 31 laps of the event, McGilton’s No. 47 Montgomery Equipment Ford Fusion was studying how to maneuver past the fellow rookie. He didn’t think what happened next was possible.
