Saturday night June 16, 2007, the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division entry list for the event at Berlin (MI) Raceway read like a who’s who of short track racing stars in the Upper Midwest.
At a track that is synonymous with short track racing in Michigan and beyond, track champions, former touring series standouts, racing Hall of Famers and talented young racers all joined together for 200 laps of fast action at the Berlin 0.437 mile oval.
With all the big names and faces in the field, one would think a relative newcomer to the ASALMS ranks would be intimidated. But Keeton Hanks is not one to ever be intimidated - he’s a racer’s racer. That’s why Hanks was able to dominated over the star-studded field early in the event and ran up front in all of the 200 laps before securing a solid seventh-place finish at Berlin.
“(Being up front) was a great experience for me as a driver, ” said Hanks, who started on the pole and led the first 82 laps. “I learned a lot and am going to try to better next time. We got pretty out of control and loose there at the end of the race and it was all I could do. I gave it all I had and we finished where I think we deserved. Not a bad night, just disappointing. I thought we could have done a little better. ”
