“The night the lights went out in Georgia” may be a song, but it was also the description of the way things went at Lanier National Speedway last Saturday night.
Fortunately, when the lights went out on the track, all the racers managed to bring their cars to a halt without hitting anything or anyone. After the local Sportsman drivers finished their race, interrupted one time by rain and again by the light failure, the Late Model Stock Cars came out. Boyett, on his way south from an appearance at “Salute to Motorsports” day at Carowinds Amusement Park, stopped at Braselton, Georgia’s Lanier Speedway for a day of testing before the Saturday evening feature race.
Practice and qualifying wound up with a top ten start position for the Florida teen. In the race, he started moving the No. 11 Boyett’s Ford Fusion forward, only to have the track change opposite to the expected changes. The track changes and traffic led to a “The car started off pretty good for the first ten or fifteen laps and then it just started going away. It was like I was out there driving a dirt modified, ” he said. “I was sawing on that steering wheel and feathering on that gas pedal, but we did what we could.
“We got spun out towards the end of the race coming off of Turn Two and just did what we could with what we had left, which wasn’t a whole lot. We still crossed the finish line under power so we had a better night. We had a good race. ” The finish was in tenth position, another top ten in the young career.
