Myrtle Beach Speedway, home track for the USAR Pro Cup series, is often known as a track tough on drivers and their equipment. The Works/Mac Tools #4S clean team of Jay Fogleman surpassed that old saying when they posted the quickest time in practice and followed it up by a sixth place starting spot for the race. However it was mechanical gremlins that bit Fogleman in the end, soon after he took control of the lead resulting in an early exit of the Bi-Lo 250 on lap 206. The alternator overcharged the battery and burned up the post. After losing 14 laps in the pits to disconnect the alternator and replace the cables and battery, Fogleman came back out on lap 220 to finish the race in 28th place.
After qualifying third, team mate Jody Lavender also experienced problems while running up front. On lap 189 the #4N car ran over debris on the track which hit a fitting on the valve cover and caused the oil leakage to smoke, at which time he was black flagged. Even with a DNF, Lavender was able to finish 29th.
That’s how the weekend went for Fogleman at the half-mile semi banked oval, located just outside Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The day seemed to be on track when The Works sponsored car shot to the top of the speed charts during practice and posted a solid sixth fastest lap during qualifying. It was during the race that the North Carolina based team really showed their strength when teammate Jody Lavender, driving the Greased Lightning Ford Fusion, took over the lead until smoke billowed from his car, creating an early exit from the event.
“It was disappointing to end the night the way we did, but it was great to see two number 4’s on the leader board. The main thing is that we are focused as a team to race with the top competitors. Being only fifteen points from tenth and sixty-two from fifth, we are still in the game. The next two races will be crucial as we keep this momentum going, ” said Fogleman.
