After failing to win a Cup Series pole for eight years, Mark Martin now has three in one season.

The ninth driver Friday to make a qualifying attempt at 1-mile Phoenix International Raceway, Martin posted a time (26.903 seconds, 133.814 mph) that stood up against the drivers that followed him on a racing surface that cooled throughout the afternoon—but not as much as Martin expected. NASCAR

“I’m excited about the race, and I didn’t expect to get the pole,” Martin said. “That wasn’t a spectacular lap. We didn’t leave a lot laying out there. I really got a lot at Atlanta and Bristol that surprised us.”

Prior to Atlanta, Martin had not won a pole in the series since May 2001 at Richmond.

Kyle Busch will start on the outside pole after posting the second best lap at 133.725 m.p.h.  Kansas City Star
