Tim Sawyer went from the rear of the pack to the front to pick up the win for the Northwest Modifieds second stop of the season at Stateline Speedway Saturday night.
Sawyer, who set fast time for the class, started on the fourth row and worked his way towards the front chasing dash and heat winner Frank Volz Jr. Both drivers were in the hunt for pole sitter and race leader Randy Lerch at midway during the race.
Volz tracked down Lerch first but was unable to complete a pass to the outside, allowing Sawyer to move underneath and into second place. Sawyer’s move put himself into position to pass Lerch for the lead on lap 24, rocketing to the outside in the turns carrying momentum.
Sawyer captured the checkers first followed by Lerch and Volz in third. Dan Noble and Rick Gimeno rounded out the top five. The 40-lap race went caution free with no incidents.
Bonney Lake, Washington Legends driver Nick Johnson mastered Stateline Speedway with two wins during the evening. The Pro division driver, who has won numerous races in the past two seasons at the track, set fast time, with a new track record at 15.13 seconds in route to the victories.
Johnson survived an early race caution fest to pass heat winner and overall Semi Pro top finisher Kyle Oman to the inside on lap six to capture the 30-lap feature.
The race saw multiple spins and crashes bunching up the field on restarts. Oman held off Master division winner Randy Schaaf late in the race for second. Douglas Anderson the B heat winner finished fourth, Alex Kerslake fifth.
Master division driver Keith Van Dyne won his first Legends race claiming the B trophy dash.
Billy Swift tracked down early race leader Kyle Kennedy to win the 20-lap feature for the Hobby Cars. Kennedy, winner of the B heat, held off Swift for three laps but in the end slipped to third behind Swift and fast time setter Ned Pennington at the finish line.
Swift also won the fast dash and heat race.
Next Saturday the Inland Northwest Winged Sprints Cars return after their rain out May 12. The sprints will be joined by the four cylinder Outlaw Compacts and Street Stocks.
