ARCA RE/MAX Series (ARS) Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Phillip McGilton is feeling pretty good heading into Friday’s Kansas Lottery $150 Grand. And he should be. The rookie driver enters the fifth ARCA race of the season with a wail of momentum including a career best seventh place finish last Sunday at Salem Speedway.
The Brewco Motorsports development driver also sits third in the championship standings closing in on the current front runners Justin Allgaier and Frank Kimmel. Returning to the site of his first career top-10 finish last July, McGilton this year is an eye-opener and contending driver making him a threat for his second go-around in the Heart of America.
“I’m looking forward to Kansas, ” said McGilton, a native of Marion, Illinois. “This place is special to me. We had a good car last year and we were able to walk away with a good finish. The bar has been raised from last season to this season and I’m ready. ”
While the team is bringing the same Ford Fusion they competed with at Nashville Superspeedway earlier this month, veteran crew chief Shawn Parker threw a completely different setup on the car for this event with the intention to making them a factor for the win. In the same event last year, Brewco Motorsports captured the ARCA pole and finished a strong third. Those same results are equally possible Friday afternoon.
“Shawn has worked really hard on our ARCA program, ” McGilton continued. “Our chemistry is getting better and the results are showing that. Our season is going smoothly. I only expect it to get even better the rest of the year. ”
The Brewco Motorsports team tested at Kentucky Speedway before heading West to Kansas Speedway Tuesday and the results were promising. “We had a great test at Kentucky, ” McGilton added. “We brought the same car from the test to the race here. I think it will help me. Kansas and Kentucky are very similar and with the lap times we were posting at Kentucky it has me looking forward to Friday’s race. ”
