Quite often in racing the finishing spot recorded for history is not indicative of how well the team did in a race. Such was the case for 5K Motorsports drivers Derek Thorn and Kris Stump at San Antonio Speedway last Saturday night in the season opener for the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division.
After spending all weekend at the top of the speed charts every practice and posting strong efforts in qualifying, racing luck doomed both drivers to disappointing finishes in the Alamo 200. The record book will show Thorn finishing 16th and Stump coming home 20th, as their driving ability could not outrun racing luck! Derek Thorn and Kris Stump can’t wait to get to the Music City Motorplex in Nashville on March 31st.

Derek Thorn started the weekend by posting the top speed in the first practice on Friday afternoon at San Antonio Speedway. An early draw in qualifying was a concern but Derek posted a strong third best time. The invert drawing of nine would put Derek Thorn back in the seventh starting position for the season opening Alamo 200. Thorn would get sent to the back twice for causing cautions and race his way back to the front both times!
Unfortunately a part that got damaged in an earlier incident gave out in the final laps launching Derek into the turn three wall while running sixth. “We had a second place car tonight so this result is disappointing, ” said Thorn after the race. “I wish we got to race again next week! “
Kris Stump: Sponsors-Tiger Light, Quality Packaging, KrisStump.com. Veteran ASALMS driver Kris Stump was uncertain about his racing future until just a few short weeks ago. The move to 5K Motorsports showed instant results with Stump second best in the first practice on Friday behind his teammate Derek Thorn.
