With a car that was apparently perfect when it rolled out of the hauler, Rusty Daniels was too fast to catch at the end of Saturday’s 100-lap limited late model stock race at East Carolina Motor Speedway.
Daniels started third and stayed near the front for the first 75 laps before moving into the lead with about 20 laps to go. He held the lead through three caution-flag restarts and pulled away from John Staton and Phillip Gibson over the final 14 laps. He took home $1,000 for the win.
“(The) car was perfect, ” Daniels, of Alliance, said. “Ain’t turned a bolt on it all day. “
Staton, of Chesapeake, Va., led the middle third of the race, but right-side tires he took in the mandatory caution at lap 60 didn’t agree with his car. “It was great up to the 60th, ” he said. “Man, it was just too tight (afterward). I wish I had left them off. “
Finishing third was Gibson.
The race, sponsored by KT Service Co. and All-N-One Graphic Designs, was slowed by 11 caution periods, including the mandatory one on lap 60.
The night’s other big race was a 40-lap UCAR contest sponsored by Walls Roofing, Easy Muffler Shop, West Custom UCARS and DOE Motorsports. Joey Davidson of Greenville was leading when a mandatory caution flag flew on lap 25 and track official inverted the top 10 cars. That moved Clayton Farmer of Ahoskie into the lead, and he held off Joshua Eubanks of LaGrange to take the win. Finishing third was Steve Wadford of Greenville.
Farmer’s win netted him $500.
In other races at ECMS’ season-ending Fall Brawl, Carmen Wilson of Belvoir won the pure stock 4-cylinder 20-lap contest.
Greenville’s Coy Whitehurst won the 30-lap super stock 4-cylinder race.
Benjie Oakley of Bethel won the stock look-alike 25-lapper.
Brenda Council of Williamston won the 12-lap women’s “powder puff” race.
Though racing has concluded for 2007, ECMS will hold a free pig-picking for race drivers, teams and families and friends Oct. 20 starting at noon.
