It’s probably a good thing that Max Zanoni and Marbeth West aren’t shy, because these Livingston County residents attract attention every time they start their cars.
Zanoni, of Genoa Township, and West, of Putnam Township, don’t drive flashy, sports cars, mammoth SUVs or classic cars that make people stop and “remember when.”

They drive small cars. Very small cars.
“It’s like leading a parade no matter where you go,” said West, who drives a 9.8-foot-long, three-wheeled Chinese-made Wildfire. “On the highway, people are always pulling up next to me and snapping pictures with their cell phones.”
“You do attract a lot of attention,” agreed Zanoni, who drives an 8.8-foot-long smart fortwo Passion Coupe. “But the nice thing is that everyone smiles and waves.”
While their two alternative vehicles are quite different in form and function, they do share one thing Zanoni and West both appreciate: good gas mileage. In West’s case, it’s 70 mpg and in Zanoni’s 40 mpg.
Though they’re small in size, Livingston County residents who are giving smaller, alternative vehicles a try so far are pretty happy with how miserly they are on gas.
