Heading into the Mark Brooks Memorial Bi-Lo 250 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service Tom Hessert was excited. He was coming off a strong showing, running with the leaders much of the race at Iowa Speedway, and he had run well at Myrtle Beach, SC Speedway before.
However the excitement turned to despair as just about nothing went right for the MAACO America’s Body Shop Chevy team in the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup race on Saturday (October 6th). “It was a struggle from practice on Friday right through the race itself, ” said the young Cherry Hill, NJ college student. “We struggled on new tires, struggled trying to get forward bite and barely made the show (qualifying 31st in the 36 car starting field with a 20.974 second effort).
“In the race the car was tight at the start and just kept getting tighter. With 96 laps in the record book we were down a couple of laps. I can not remember the last time I was lapped like that. It was frustrating. ” The end came when Hessert and his MAACO America’s Body Shop Chevy got caught up in an accident that left him with no choice but to be part of it. The damage put him out of the race. He was credited with a 36th place finish completing 108 laps of the 261 lap race.
Next on the schedule for the young racer is the Dan Duncan Memorial Aaron’s 250 at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, GA on Saturday, October 20th at 7 p. m. The Soy BioDiesel 225 run at Iowa Speedway can be seen on SPEED at 12 noon on October 12th.
