Tom Hessert had one of the most impressive runs of his rookie season in the SoyBio Diesel 225 at Iowa Speedway back on Saturday, September 22nd. That makes him very excited about his next race which is set for Saturday, October 6th at Myrtle Beach, SC Speedway.
The Cherry Hill, NJ racer put the MAACO America’s Body Shop Monte Carlo in the race with the seventh fastest time with more than 40 racers trying to make the starting field.
“We really ran well at Iowa. It was probably our best effort of the season, ” said the 21-year-old Drexel University student. “We were on our way to a great finish and then our luck turned sour. ” Throughout the race Hessert ran with the leaders.
“We were running second and third, doing some side-by-side racing going into the final stages of the race and we just slid up. A guy in the low groove hit me in the left rear, ” was how Hessert described it. “With some damage to the car it affected the aerodynamics of the MAACO America’s Body Shop Monte Carlo and we were no longer a factor. ”
With less than 20 laps to go Hessert was still running on the lead lap when the fuel tank went dry. By the time he was pushed to the pits and refueled he had lost a few laps. Hessert was credited with a 27th place finish completing 225 of 229 laps in the race.
“We did not get the finish we had thought we were headed for, ” said Hessert. “However we were all excited about our strong performance and being able to run with the leaders. The car performed well. It really has us all excited about going on to the next event. We feel that we have shown we can be a contender. ”
Coming off such a strong effort at Iowa, Hessert is optimistic about his chances to have a great showing in the Mark Brooks Memorial Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Black’s Tire & Auto Service Championship race on Saturday, October 6th.
This is the third event in the five race championship series that will close out the 2007 season for the USAR Hooters ProCup Series racers and takes place at the popular Myrtle Beach, SC Speedway. Racing will start at 7:30 pm.
