The Second Race of the 2007 Season in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts is now complete! The I-70 (MO) Speedway located East of Kansas City in Odessa, Missouri served as gracious hosts for the Missouri 100 Presented by KC Power Equipment.
The ASALMS Northern Division made their first of two appearances at the wicked fast 0.543 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval and will return to the Show-Me State on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday September 21-22-23, 2007 for the North VS South Shootout/World Cup 200, which is a points race for both the ASALMS Northern and Southern Divisions.
As for the Missouri 100 Presented by KC Power Equipment, New ASALMS Northern Division Points Leader, Trent Snyder took the lead from new ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Dave Gentile Jr., on Lap 66 and from there, the Ironton, Minnesota driver, who earlier in the evening won the ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier Award, would go on to win his first ASALMS Feature of the 2007 season.
I-70 Speedway Super Trucks Graduate, Danny Ouderkirk and Dave Gentile Jr., led the 26-car field to the green flag to begin the Missouri 100 Presented by KC Power Equipment. As the field dove into turn three, Josh Wallace and David Wood got together heading into the corner resulting in Wood slamming the Turn Three wall hard! He was ok but done for the evening while Wallace suffered heavy damage and tried to repair his machine but parked his ride six laps later.
On the restart, Ouderkirk took over the lead while the rest of the field settled in behind him. Gentile Jr., stayed glued to Ouderkirk’s back bumper and finally on Lap 12 would take over the top spot bringing fellow rookie, Mike Heiss with him.
A very scary incident took place on Lap 26 when Denver, Colorado driver, Bear Lynch came out of turn two when his car suddenly caught on fire due to a blown engine as the car was completely engulfed in flames on Lap 26. Lynch got the car stopped in Turn Three and immediately climbed out of the car while the I-70 Safety Crews put the fire out. Lynch was shaken but otherwise ok but done for the evening.
Gentile Jr., would continue to pace the field while ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Trent Snyder, who started 10th, patiently picked his way through the pack and was in second spot at halfway on Lap 50. A caution on Lap 57 for a spinning Wes Griffith Jr., place Snyder right on the back bumper of Gentile Jr., when the green flag came back out.
Snyder methodically worked high and low trying to find a way around Gentile Jr., when on Lap 65, Snyder made the pass to the inside coming down the front stretch to take over the lead and try to pull away from the rest of the field. Four laps later, I-70 Speedway ASA Late Model Division Points Leader, Austin Siebert, the winner of the last three weekly features in the Show-Me State, saw his night end when he backed his mount into the Turn Four wall.
Things happen quick at the Odessa, Missouri speed plant as on Lap 77, Charlie Menard and Danny Ouderkirk, who were fighting for fifth place collided coming out of Turn Four and Ouderkirk was sent hard into the inside front stretch wall and done for the evening. The 19-year-old was ok and ASALMS Officials sent Menard to the rear of the field for aggressive driving.
Two laps later, Rookie Griffin McGrath and I-70 regular, Mike Vannoy Jr., got together at the start/finish line and both ended up in the same spot where Ouderkirk crashed just two laps before. Both drivers were ok but both were also done for the evening.
Snyder led the field to green for one more restart while Gentile Jr., and Mike Heiss stayed closed to Snyder’s back bumper. The two rookies tried to give Snyder one more last challenge, but Snyder wasn’t to be denied as the Ironton, Minnesota driver would fend off the advances of the two rookies and go on to win his first ASALMS Northern Division Feature of the 2007 season.
With the win, Snyder in his Dondelinger Chevrolet/Milaca Unclaimed Freight Featuring Ice Castle Fish Houses/Performance Concepts/Chevrolet Monte Carlo takes over the 2007 ASALMS Northern Division Points Lead after coming into the weekend sixth in the season long points chase.
Gentile Jr., finished a career high second to take over the ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year Points Lead while Heiss also scored a career high with a third place showing. Menard came from the rear of the field after his penalty to finish a season high fourth while 2006 ASALMS North Rookie of the Year, Derek Neville completed the Top Five with a season high fifth place showing.
Neville’s younger brother, Nick Neville finished a season high sixth while Jason Taghikhani earned the Hard-Charger Award with his 25th to a career high seventh place run. Peter Cozzolino finished eighth to remain second in the Overall ASALMS North title chase.
15-year-old Chad Finley scored a career high ninth place finish to move into second in the freshman title chase behind Gentile Jr., and 16-year-old Altus, Oklahoma teenager, Keaton Feller rounded out the Top 10 with his 10th place showing in his first ASALMS Northern Division start
Earlier in the afternoon in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying Snyder set the pace over the 33-car field. Snyder drove around the Odessa, Missouri speed plant at a fast 16.731 which measures out to 116.837 MPH while Pierce City, Missouri teenager, 18-year-old Brian Green won the GM Performance Parts Shootout over fellow I-70 regulars, Chris Mikesell and Todd Bates.
