Fireworks were flying for two reasons Wednesday night—Independence Day and the Millwood family—as young Tyler Millwood earned his first win this season during the Summer Shootout at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
The 16-year-old Millwood’s victory in the INEX Legends Young Lions feature capped a week that went from frustrating to fantastic in just 24 hours.
On the eve of Millwood’s victory, Round Four of LMS’ Summer Shootout Series was a race the teenager would prefer to forget. Millwood started 11th in his No. 31 INEX Legends car in the Young Lions feature and had worked his way into the top five before being involved in an incident with the No. 35 car of Trevor Farbo, which resulted in a “popped left-front tire” that “knocked the valve stem out of it. ” Then on a restart, “two cars got together and [we] got tangled up with them. ” To add insult to injury, the Kingston, Ga., native was later black-flagged for an unpleasant confrontation with the No. 89 car of Scott Hubler. When asked about his night, the young driver simply smiled and said, “We’ll fix it and run better tomorrow. ”
And run better he did! In Round Five of the Summer Shootout July Fourth Celebration, Millwood was able to put the past behind him and bring home his first victory of the year. After starting fifth, Millwood maintained the position until lap 4, when the cars battling for the lead tangled. Millwood made a daring move to the inside and snagged the lead.
“Everybody went to the outside; I jumped to the bottom, got out front and kept going, “ he said with a smile. Millwood then maintained the lead for the remainder of the race, despite that fact that he may not have had the fastest car in the field.
“My car wasn’t the best in the world, [Wyatt Dallenbach in the No. 11 car] was a little better [from the] center off. I tried to keep it on the bottom and was able to keep the lead. ” Millwood will defend his title Tuesday in Round Six of the Summer Shootout on Lowe’s Motor Speedway’s quarter-mile track.
Millwood is being helped in his career by training from Future Stars in Racing Academy. The Academy helps prepare young drivers for success outside the car in public speaking; sponsor presentations; working with the media and behavior on and off the track. Future Stars in Racing is the exclusive driver development partner with the ASA Late Model Series. Marketing partners include Safety-Kleen, Awesome Racewear, and Sunbelt Web Solutions.
