Coy Whitehurst outran the rain and the rest of the field to win tonight’s super stock 4-cylinder race at East Carolina Motor Speedway in Robersonville.
Whitehurst, of Greenville, benefited from a poor start by outside front row sitter Chuck Godley of Washington and opened a wide lead in the first lap. Midway through the race Godley caught up with Whitehurst’s Ford and pulled even but was never able to complete the pass. Whitehurst had an anxious moment when Derek Stewart of Washington spun out in front of him on lap 28.
Whitehurst has been beset by mechanical bugs and crashes in the three previous races this year. “I’m actually just glad to make 30 laps; five or six more laps and 64 (Godley) might have come back, ” Whitehurst said.
Godley said he missed a shift in his Ford at the start of the race, giving Whitehurst a chance to build a lead.
Making a late pass to finish second was Reggie S. Toler of Washington. Godley finished third.
After that race rain set in and caused the rest of the schedule to be canceled.
