The NEC Australian Rally Champion will be crowned this weekend as the final round of this year’s series, the NGK Rally of Melbourne gets underway in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.
Friday morning will officially kick off event proceedings with a media day to be held at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville, as drivers shake down in final preparation for the event.
Before heat one commences on Saturday morning, all competitors will head to New Quay at Docklands on Friday night for the ceremonial start, where the public can see the cars and meet the stars of Australian rallying.
Victoria’s married duo Simon and Sue Evans would need to encounter an unfortunate turn of events to not secure the 2007 title this weekend, needing only a handful of points to become back-to-back Australian champions.
Expecting to put in its strongest performance of the year at the final round of the NEC Australian Rally Championship in front of a home crowd, the Pirtek Rally Team is focussed on finishing the year strongly.
The only organisation in the world running the Super 2000 version of the Ford Fiesta, the Pirtek Rally Team will field Fiestas in Melbourne for Michael Guest / David Green and Darren Windus / Jon Mortimer.
“There’s so much potential in the Fiesta, ” former World Rally Championship competitor Guest said.
“We are keen to show that on the challenging roads throughout the Yarra Valley.
“It is an event we feel should suit our cars, but more importantly it’s about finishing the year on the right note and looking forward to 2008. “
Young Victorian Brendan Reeves is currently sitting fourth in the Championship behind Dean Herridge, and with Herridge not competing in the final round, Reeves has the chance to secure third position in the Championship in his first full year of competition.
A revelation this year, stamping his authority as a future Australian Rally star, Reeves paired with his sister Rhianon Smyth for their first full year in the top class, and the nineteen year old has driven his Les Walkden prepared Subaru beautifully this year.
