You have to know that a company that chooses the six-star Pleiades constellation for its logo is going to take a far-sighted approach to its engineering.
It is one of only two automobile companies in the world that is committed to the flat-four, “boxer” engine (the other is Porsche). The flat-four aligns two pistons horizontally opposing two others rather than having them stacked vertically in line or in a V-configuration. There are several benefits.
While Subaru devotees are passionate about their cars, they have always represented a relatively small niche in the marketplace, perhaps enjoying the sense of “exclusivity” that came with the brand. But in search of a wider audience, the 2008 Impreza steps into the mainstream. The “quirky’ styling of the previous model is replaced by a more contemporary, aerodynamic shape in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback styles.
The chunky three-piece grille of 2007 gives way to a more stylish, one piece, spread-wing grille neatly integrated with the projector-style headlamp clusters.
The body sides are accentuated with a waistline crease that flows from the front fenders to the rear taillight assembly and in a departure from Subaru tradition all four doors now have full frames, adding rigidity to the window glass.
The rear doors open to 75 degrees, making it very easy to get in and out or install a child seat. Rear seat passengers also enjoy 50 mm. of additional legroom.
