2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Sports Sedan Gets A Radical Makeover

Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi introduced its ninth generation Lancer for the 2008 model year as an all-new compact sport sedan, drawing its inspiration and design cues from the Japanese manufacturer’s attention grabbing Concept-X show car first shown in 2005. The shark-nosed front end resembles that of a jet fighter with its air intakes, distinct wedge-like profile and sharp, tight angular edges. The cabin is sleekly curved, following the sharply sloped hood and angular nose, while some will view the drastically abbreviated rear section as too short.
This latest Lancer iteration is based on a new performance-engineered global platform that may also be found on Mitsubishi’s Outlander SUV and on the upcoming Lancer Evolution. Power comes from a 2.0-liter DOHC MIVEC four-cylinder engine that generates 152 horsepower at 6,000 rpm along with 146 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm. California-version Lancers are PZEV certified, delivering 143 horses and 143 lb.-ft. of torque in the same rev ranges. The motor will mate to either a five-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, or an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) instead of a conventional automatic. The top level GTS Lancer model features an exclusive six-step Sportronic mode that enables the driver to control the CVT operation utilizing magnesium steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters - a first in the segment.
