USAC racing in the Copper State (Arizona) has taken many forms in the past 52 years, from Midgets to Stock Cars to Indy Cars to Sprint Cars to Mini-Indy to Supermodifieds to Silver Crown to Formula 2000 to TQ Midgets to Grand-Am road racing and even Solar Powered events! But Saturday night marks only the second time in 266 races that the USAC Ford Focus Midgets have competed there.
Havasu 95 Speedway in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. hosts its second race in as many years with a 30-lap feature event on tap at the 1/4-mile paved oval. Last year’s race at the track was captured by Michael Faccinto, who went on to win USAC’s 2007 National Ford Focus Championship.
Ford Focus Midget racing debuted in 2002 and in just five years has spanned the continent, erupting into various series across the United States and culminating in a National Championship the past two years.
Saturday night’s event will showcase stars of USAC’s California Pavement Series, which opens at Havasu 95 and returns Nov. 3. In between are events at Las Vegas, Nev., plus California venues at Tracy, Blythe, Roseville, Irwindale, Madera and Salt Lake City, Utah. The series finale is Nov. 22 at Irwindale, Calif.
Tim Skoglund of Fresno, Calif. finished second at Lake Havasu City last year but emerged as the California Pavement Series Champion, beating Faccinto by 27 points. His competition was formidable and included female drivers Laura Hayes and Laura Porter, who were fourth and sixth in the final standings.
Porter, who hails from Holland, owns the one-lap Lake Havasu City track record of 14.584 seconds drivers will aim at Saturday.
