16-year-old Chris Windom, of Canton, Ill., is headed for one of the most famous half-mile race tracks in the world this weekend, the hallowed grounds of Knoxville (IA) Raceway for the “Knoxville Pepsi-Mt. Dew Midget Nationals, ” a USAC National Midget Car Series event.
Preliminary entries for the Knoxville program, co-sanctioned by the American Race Drivers Club in Pennsylvania (ARDC), Badger Midget Auto Racing Association in Wisconsin (BMARA), POWRi in Illinois (formerly Gateway), Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association in Colorado (RMMRA), and Southern Midget Racing Series in Oklahoma (SMRS), indicate a stellar field for the two-night event. Friday’s feature is 20 laps while the Saturday feature is a 25-lapper.
“I have been going to Knoxville Raceway since I was a little kid, ” Windom exclaimed. “We helped out a winged sprint car team that ran there – Billy Stroud, a friend of my dad’s from Chilicothe, Illinois. I’ve wanted to race there since I was a little kid, so I’m super excited to be going there this weekend with my Midget. ”
Although the three-day race weekend road trip is pretty typical for the Windom Motorsports Team, they will most likely head back to their home turf and Kokomo (IN) Speedway for Sunday’s Sprint car show.
“I’m happy to run as much as possible, ” said Windom. “Breaks are good when you are not running well, but it doesn’t bother me to be gone racing. I like to hang out with my friends back at home whenever I can, but the more seat time I can get at this stage in my career, the better I’ll be. ”
