16-year-old Chris Windom, of Canton, Ill., has a week’s break from the USAC trail and will take that time to head to central Indiana for a trio of dirt Sprint car shows at Bloomington (IN) Speedway on Friday, Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway on Saturday and Kokomo (IN) Speedway on Sunday, in preparation for the huge USAC “Indiana Sprint Week, ” a monster eight-race series of USAC National Sprint Car Series events scheduled at those tracks and other Indiana venues spanning from July 11th to 21st (see below for full schedule).
“The three tracks I’m racing this weekend are actually three of the tracks that I have won at in the last year… sort of (reference to win taken away from him at Gas City a few weeks ago), so they are definitely three of my most favorite tracks. We’re going to try to sweep the whole weekend and turn our season around a bit, ” Windom said confidently.
First stop: Bloomington Speedway, one of Indiana’s finest quarter-mile facilities that is home to some of the greatest dirt racing in the country. Windom ran in the top-10 in points in last year’s Bloomington Speedway track championship.
“Bloomington has always been one of my best tracks, ” Windom said. “I’ve run there a lot in the past and have done well almost every time I’ve raced there. I think I’ve figured that track out. For the most part, the track is prepared the same way every week, and usually lasts until the end of the night, although it might slick of a bit. I’ve only raced there once this year, so it will be good to go back. It’s full stomp there the whole night – really racey top to bottom. It’s not a one-lane track and you can always pass, which is great for a driver. ”
The site of a Windom victory earlier this year, Lawrenceburg Speedway is a place that he’s anxious to return to in order to hone his skills for the first two races on the upcoming USAC “Indiana Sprint Week” schedule, with USAC events slated for that facility July 11th and 12th.
“I really like Lawrenceburg and have figured out the track pretty well, ” Windom stated. “I’ve won there this year, so it’s a place I’m excited to go back to. My crew chief Brian Cripe really has the place figured out, which gives me a lot of confidence going into this weekend as well as for the “Indiana Sprint Week” shows – he’s won a lot of features there. I usually run really well there every time I’ve been there. ”
The traditional Sunday stop for the Windom Motorsports crew is at Kokomo Speedway, near the team’s shop in Frankfort, Ind. Windom loves the place, and is happy to race there on an almost-weekly basis.
“Kokomo is probably my most favorite track in Indiana, ” Windom explained. “We haven’t gone too well this year there, but last year, it was a great track for me – full throttle all the way around, just the way I like it. People call it a mini-Eldora because of the nice banking where you can run right up against the wall and you’re on the gas the whole way around. I used to do really well at Kokomo, and am looking forward to another chance this weekend to get back to the way I used to race thereand possibly take home a win – that would be a great way to start our mid-summer swing! ”
