It was a new car and a new look for Donny Schatz at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night, but the results were the same as he found his way to the winner’s circle at the famed track for the third straight time.
Schatz, driving a specially painted Snap-On Tools J&J battled down the stretch with Joey Saldana and Jason Meyers for the $10,000 win, which was the 55th A-Feature win of his World of Outlaws career.
“How much cooler can that be, ” said Schatz of winning in his first outing in the Snap-On Tools machine. “You take the best tools and build this brand new race car, and it’s just been a lot of fun. I walked by my car tonight and it wasn’t yellow, so I kept walking. We are just excited to take a car out the first night and be as decent as we were. You can always improve on things, and we will make things better on it. It’s a lot of fun to be here and to race with the guys that are fast every night. ”
The 25-lap A-Feature got off to an auspicious start when rookie Sam Hafertepe Jr. got upside, leading to a complete restart. On the second start, Schatz charged down the front straightaway winning a drag race with Kerry Madsen, who was charging on the high side of the race track.
Madsen fought back on the second lap to take the lead, with Schatz powering his way around on the high side of the track on the following circuit.
