Q: Saturday’s race at Lernerville Speedway is another event on a bigger track. You finished 10th in both of the Twin 30’s for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup. What is your outlook for Saturday’s race?
Donny Schatz: “We really hope to challenge for the win. This year, they tried something new with the format for the Don Martin Memorial to give the fans a good show. We raced from 20th to 10th in the first feature and then really didn’t make any progress in the second one. From our standpoint, it wasn’t quite as fun as the past couple of years when ran a 40-lap race.”
“We like Lernerville when it becomes slick through the middle and the cushion gets moved way up the track. That’s when guys can race up through the field. A lot of that depends on the weather. If it’s hot and dry, then the track has a better chance of getting that way. It’s been a while since we’ve raced there late in the year, so we’ll just have to see what happens.”
“We’re excited to get back out there and, hopefully, get back to running in the front.”
Q: With only nine races remaining and the points battle really tight, do you change your strategy for a particular race?
Donny Schatz: “I can honestly say that we don’t look at one night any differently than the other. We set out each night to win. The goal for this team starting the year was to win the most races. We’ve won a lot, but not the most, so we still have some work to do there. It’s about winning races and the rest of the stuff will work itself out.”
“Every race we have left on the schedule is important to us. I feel like I have the best crew in the business and drive for the best team out here. As a driver, I’ve got to do my best every time I get in the car. We’ll take that approach every night left on the schedule. Hopefully, when it’s all said and done, we’ll have accomplished what we set out to do.”
